The Humber ports support 33,000 jobs and together handle more than 65 million tonnes of cargo.

Immingham is currently the UK's largest port by volume and in 2017 Hull will be home to one of the UK's largest port developments; the £310 million Green Port Hull project with Siemens.

The Port of Immingham offers an extensive range of roro and lolo freight services to Northern Europe, Scandinavia, and the Baltic.

Although retaining its strong connection with the fishing and food industry, Grimsby is the UK's major car import terminal and is at the forefront in serving the developing offshore wind energy industry.

Grimsby River Terminal can accommodate vessels carrying up to 3,000 vehicles and the port handles more than 500,000 vehicles each year as both imports and exports.

The Role

We require a Fitter to ensure Port Operations are maintained as required in a safe and cost effective manner utilising company policies and procedures. The Fitter will undertake the day-to-day mechanical maintenance and repair of the ports infrastructure and ensure that allocated work tasks are completed in line with expectations and undertaken in a safe manner whilst minimising cost and waste.

The Fitter will update the Engineering Supervisor on allocated work tasks and assist with the pre-planning of work to allow the department to perform efficiently.


  • Carry out maintenance works in a diligent and timely manner in order to meet the requirements of port operations both individually and as part of a larger team. All in accordance with ABP's risk assessments and Safe Systems of Work
  • Attend breakdowns / emergency situations during both normal hours and out of hours in order to carry out all necessary repairs
  • Assist the Engineering Maintenance Supervisors to identify future maintenance requirements /

    • repairs required
    • Carry out maintenance works in conjunction with third party contractors as required
    • Extract work orders from Mainsaver, undertaking the required tasks extracted and input any associated work history
    • Communicate with both the Marine and Operations departments during servicing operations and the repair of plant and equipment
    • Assist with the formulation or review of risk assessments as required in order to progress maintenance works
    • Ensure Semi-Skilled Engineers or Apprentices assisting in maintenance activities undertake the works in a safe, cost effective and timely manner
    • Undertake training as required in order to enable maintenance activities to be carried out as required
    • Undertake all works commensurate with both their trade and other disciplines subject to either appropriate training and or ability to carry out the works
    • Subject to receiving the appropriate training and subsequent authorisation issue relevant Permits / Permissions / Certificates of isolations in accordance with both ASP's procedures and statutory requirements ensuring works are undertaken in a safe manner

    Skills and Experience


    • Time-served tradesman and holder of an engineering qualification (City&Guilds/ONC/HNC or equivalent) and experience associated with mechanical engineering
    • Excellent communication / interpersonal skills demonstrating the ability to communicate to both internal and external customers and the ability to work as part of a team
    • Ability to demonstrate a fundamental understanding of Health and Safety principles including Risk Assessment and Hazard Perception
    • Sound IT skills demonstrating an understanding and use of a range of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook
    • Preferably have experience and understanding of Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and their application




  • Previous experience within port maintenance or a varied, intensive operational environment
