The Hull York Medical School, the joint medical school of the University of Hull and the University of York, is seeking to appoint an Academic Support Officer. This is an important operational position in the School, who works closely with the Governance Manager and the Chair of Board of Studies, and is responsible for supporting the academic governance, quality assurance, and quality enhancement activities in the School.
This is an exciting time to join Hull York Medical School. Following the Department of Health initiative to expand the number of medical school places in England, the Hull York Medical School was awarded an additional 90 places a year from 2020, representing a 70% increase in places. For our School, this expansion of undergraduate medical places is a significant milestone in our history. The School is therefore undergoing considerable change, which will continue until academic year 2022/23.
The Academic Support Officer assumes the role of the Secretariat of the Board of Studies, the most senior academic committee in the Medical School reporting to the Joint Senate Committee. As the Secretariat, the role is responsible for supporting a wide range of regulatory and operational academic governance matters (programme quality and student progression) for the Board of Studies.
In terms of quality assurance, the role supports the regular compliance, quality review and reporting activities required by the Medical School, the University of Hull and the University of York, our professional and regulatory bodies such as the General Medical Council (GMC), and the sector regulator.
In terms of quality improvement, the role supports the Medical School’s activities around student evaluation and feedback, specific improvement projects, and the wider use of quality data.
Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
We are seeking to appoint an experienced, value-driven officer who has experience and skill in academic governance, quality assurance, and quality enhancement activities. The appointee will be based at the University of York campus but will be required to travel occasionally to the University of Hull campus and other NHS placement sites as and when required.
