Responsible for:       The Artistic Programmer ensures that the theatres’ programme of visiting and produced work (including co-productions and tours) is planned to capture all opportunities and achieves both financial targets of the highest artistic quality.

You will be responsible for negotiating key terms with producers, drafting contracts and assessing visiting work for its suitability in line with the theatres artistic policy. 


Principal Duties: 

Artistic Programme:

  • Plan and co-ordinate a diverse visiting programme for the Main house and Studio Theatre supporting the Artistic Director with developing exciting and coherent seasons of performing arts activity (theatre, music, comedy, dance and other live performances) that can meet a net target of c.£100k per annum.
  • Research and develop the visiting programme for approval by the Artistic Director and Executive Director including assessing its commercial viability with the Director of Communication and its proposed scheduling.
  • Maintain good liaison and effective communication of information from incoming artists and companies and to ensure the smooth running of all
  • Ensure there is detailed and accurate show information and oversee the delivery and implementation of programmed work, coordinating with other teams, including Technical, Marketing and Front of House.
  • Support the co-ordination of Hull Truck’s ‘Discover’ and ‘GROW’ events and
  • Co-ordinate and administrate the in-house productions/co-productions and commissions supporting and reporting to the Executive
  • Create feasibility reports on potential Touring Projects including ACE’s Strategic Touring Fund.
  • Develop strong and long-term relationships with touring venues through effective advocacy for Hull Truck’s touring productions including Tour Booking Hull Truck


Administration and Finance:

  • Responsible for effective administrative and financial management systems, to ensure the efficient running of the Visiting and In-house Artistic Programme.
  • Negotiate terms for visiting productions and prepare contracts for signing when required.
  • With the Head of Finance, to oversee all areas of finance relating to the theatres visiting and some areas of the produced programme, including providing financial reports when
  • Support the Artistic Director/Executive Director in the annual setting of appropriate financial targets for produced and visiting work and manage budgets in order to achieve
  • Co-ordinate artistic programme contracts.
  • Support the Head of Production and Technical with the management of all co-production and production
  • Attend artistic meetings and other meetings as necessary including production meetings.


Other Duties:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act, and other associated legislation, places responsibility for health and safety on all employees. Person specification:


  • Experience of curating a diverse high quality performing arts programme including delivering against agreed financial targets.
  • A passion for and understanding of regional theatre and its national context.
  • Experience in negotiating high level contracts.
  • Proven experience of producing middle scale theatre.
  • Experience of strategic planning in a cultural
  • Experience of budget management and financial control for theatre productions of at least £50,000.
  • Excellent communications and presentation skills in person and in writing.
  • Excellent relationship management skills.
  • Excellent administration and IT
  • Excellent teamworking and the ability to communicate across
  • Extensive knowledge of the theatre sector and a network of contacts within the industry.
  • Willing to work flexible
  • Ability to generate and follow through on ideas which will enhance both resources and the achievement of artistic goals.



  • Experience of report writing.
  • Demonstrate the ability to navigate challenging environments should they arise.
  • Experience of or interest in producing work for younger

Terms and Conditions:

  • This is a permanent, full time post and hours of work will be as many as may be required to meet the requirements of the post but are not less than 40 hours per week. Normal hours of work are Monday to Friday between 9am/9.30am and 6pm/6.30pm (to be agreed).

  • There will be some evening and weekend work. The post-holder will be expected to offer reasonable flexibility in their working arrangements where it is considered necessary to undertake the duties they have been employed to
  • No overtime is payable although time off in lieu for weekend overtime will be given if work is approved in advance as with the Executive Director.
  • Holiday – 28 days per annum (including public holidays) rising by 1 day per every complete year worked, to a maximum annual holiday entitlement of 33 days including public holidays. Pro rata part time working. The theatre is open over Christmas/New Year (except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) and all departments are required to be staffed during normal working hours during this time.
  • There is a 3-month probation period during which time the notice is 1 month. Upon confirmation of appointment after successful probationary period, the employee is required to give 3 months’ written notice to the company and the company will give 1-month written notice to the employee.  After 4 years’ service 1 additional week’s notice for each additional year of continuous service thereafter up to a maximum of 12 weeks.
