The East Riding is a great place to live and work and has a mixture of both rural and urban environments. The Health and Safety Team plays a key role in the Council’s Public Protection regulatory service delivery, it is a dynamic, small but friendly team with experienced inspectors who carry out mainly reactive but some proactive health and safety responsibilities.

A unique opportunity has arisen for a Team Leader, to lead and manage the health and safety advice and enforcement function in relation to regulation of commercial businesses. You will take the technical lead in managing the team. Delivering an effective advice and enforcement frontline service working with external partners, including the HSE, and commercial businesses across the whole of the East Riding of Yorkshire ensuring that business work places remain safe and health and safety priorities are delivered. Therefore you must be able to build effective relationships in relation to partnership working and transformation of joint working arrangements.

On a day by day basis you will have operational responsibility for the service to include health and safety workplace accident investigations, inspections and advice, smoke-free compliance, and for managing a number of health and safety registrations and licences to include skin piercing treatments; caravan sites, HMO’s, sports safety, petroleum and explosives. You will also Chair the Safety Advisory Group as well as provide support to the Private Housing Sector and Safety Manager in matters relating to the Events Safety Advisory Group. With the wide range of work carried out by the team, this post will appeal to an individual who enjoys variety in their working day and on-going challenges.

We are looking for an individual who has considerable health and safety experience in either the public or private sector, is professionally qualified, at degree level or equivalent (Diploma/NVQ/BTEC level 6 or above) in an Occupational Safety and Health subject. Alternatively you should hold a relevant degree/diploma/Level 6 qualification with significant recent direct health and safety management experience. You must have a good working knowledge of health and safety legislation in all areas, plus the ability to interpret and apply it.

Our ideal candidate would be someone in an existing health and safety role, with enforcement or auditing skills, who is enthusiastic, self-motivated, innovative, has integrity, is reliable, flexible and professional in their approach, experienced in front line health & safety activity with excellent communication skills (both oral and in writing) , is digitally aware and is  focused on outcomes and solutions. Recent experience in a management or supervisory role within a health and safety setting would be an advantage.

You will be based at County Hall, Beverley, however the Team works in an agile manner which includes a blended approach of attendance at the workplace as well as remote working from home and carrying out front line visits. We have a range of flexible working solutions that can be tailored to suit the individual and the service to balance work/life needs.

Applicants should hold a clean driving licence and be flexible in their working hours to meet service needs; this may include occasional evening/weekend working to investigate complaints or workplace accidents.

Applicants must be able to communicate with sufficient fluency in English to undertake their duties effectively and have a high level of interpersonal skills. A high level of IT and communication skills are essential.
