The Humber today sent out a powerful message of investment, innovation and opportunity to a high-level national audience.
Marketing Humber and the University of Hull have joined with other partners to support a major supplement in The Times newspaper focused on the region’s assets, growth and exciting further potential.
The “Investing on the Humber” supplement places a strong spotlight on the region to ensure high-level decision-makers, influencers and potential investors are fully aware of the Humber’s remarkable resurgence.
The publication highlights the advantages and opportunities the Humber offers and spells out many of the reasons why the region has attracted investment of around £20bn in recent years.
The significance of the Humber to the UK economy is underlined by the supplement featuring an article by former Chancellor George Osborne, who is now Chair of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership.
In his piece, Mr Osborne says the Humber must be “at the forefront” of the Northern Powerhouse. He writes: “Education, skills, connectivity, creating new industries – this is the Northern Powerhouse I envisaged when we created the concept. And Hull and the Humber must be at the heart of this Northern Powerhouse for it to succeed.”
Publication of the 16-page special report corresponds with a Marketing Humber breakfast event launching Humber Business Week.
The event has the theme “Now is our time” and focuses on how the Humber is reaping the benefits of bold ambition and renewed confidence. It features an audio visual presentation plotting the Humber’s past, present and future and a “what the papers say” debate on the issues highlighted by the coverage in The Times.
Marketing Humber Managing Director Dr Diana Taylor said: “In recent times the Humber has seen unprecedented investment and economic development, with so much positive change and opportunity all around.
“We are seeing a remarkable transformation in the region’s economic fortunes and prospects. Now really is our time.
“To maintain the momentum it’s important to update the Humber’s story and bring it together in one place. The Times offers the ideal opportunity to do that, as the newspaper and its digital channels have enormous credibility, influence and reach.
“This supplement promotes the Humber as a magnet for investment, a hotbed of innovation and place of great opportunity. It sends out a very positive and compelling message to investors and key influencers who are critical to realising the region’s full potential.”
Dr David Richards, Pro Vice Chancellor, Research and Enterprise at the University of Hull, said: “By capitalising on the Humber’s position at the heart of the UK’s Energy Estuary and harnessing the region’s increased confidence and ambition, significant investments in manufacturing, engineering and R&D across a range of sectors have developed during recent years. It is definitely our time and we must continue to make the most of this opportunity.
“Now, more than ever, the Humber has a powerful proposition as a place in which to live, visit, work and invest.”
The Times was selected as the ideal platform to promote the Humber’s story as it is the number one newspaper for reaching the UK’s business leaders. The supplement is included in The Times today and will be read by its daily readership of 1.1m as well as reaching the newspaper’s huge digital audience, via its website, tablet edition and social media channels.
Newsprint and glossy versions of the supplement will be used to promote the Humber at national and international conferences and exhibitions as well as being distributed to Government ministers and departments, potential investors and significant influencers.
The project has been led by Marketing Humber, the region’s place marketing organisation which is supported by the Bondholders network of more than 250 businesses and other organisations, and the University of Hull. It has also been supported by Associated British Ports, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Hull City Council, KCOM and Phillips 66.
The special report was produced for The Times by highly-respected publisher and thought leadership agency Raconteur, with the articles written by a top-level team of journalists with extensive experience writing for The Times and other leading national and international media organisations.
Richard Hadler, Publisher of the special report on the Humber, said: “Raconteur’s trusted content and high-profile distribution platform allows Marketing Humber and other partners to connect with hard-to-reach decision-makers and access the largest senior business audience in the UK national press.
“We’re really happy with the outcome of this special report and how the credibility and authority of partners such as Marketing Humber really helps to reinforce the editorial around the region’s potential and exciting opportunities.”
